Letter From Our CEO for Colorado Gives

Dear Friends and Supporters,

Recently, I had the privilege of sharing a meal with a former guest of The Delores Project in her own beautiful new apartment. She first arrived at Delores to escape domestic violence and found safety and support in our shelter. After months of healing and rebuilding, she became the first resident to receive keys when our supportive housing at Arroyo Village opened in 2019. Supported by our devoted case managers and 24/7 staff, she pursued her education, re-entered the workforce, started a business, and, two years ago, moved into independent workforce housing at Arroyo Village.

This summer, she reached a new milestone: moving into a new apartment with a rooftop view of Denver’s skyline. Over a homemade lasagna in her kitchen, I watched her joy as she shared this space, her loyal dog curled contentedly at her feet. Seeing her thrive underscored the resilience of the women and transgender individuals we serve and the power of community support during times of crisis. For those who come to Delores, access to safe, dignified shelter and a supportive community is the first step toward stability and a fulfilling future.

Her journey also reminded me how quickly life can change. Many who come to us are without the family or friends needed to navigate life’s hardships. But with the community’s help, they find belonging, the tools, and the empowerment to rebuild. This former guest’s story is just one of hundreds—each one a testament to the impact of your support. You play an essential role in every success, and we couldn’t do this life-changing work without you.

Last year, we proudly helped 42% of our shelter guests secure homes of their own, and we are committed to increasing this percentage each year. With one of the highest local housing success rates, The Delores Project provides more than shelter: we help people reclaim their worth and dignity, no matter their circumstances. This is the Delores difference.

As Colorado Gives Day approaches, I invite you to continue partnering with us in this mission. Every dollar you give is an investment in someone’s journey to stability, safety, and hope. Thank you for making this possible.

In Gratitude,

Emily Wheeland
